About Anglesea

Anglesea Information

Anglesea originally known as Swampy Creek. Subsequently it became known as Anglesea after Anglesea in Wales. Situated 111km south west of Melbourne at the northern end of the Great Ocean Road. The region was settled in the 1830s by squatters attracted to the freshwater creek and the grazing land which lay behind the sand dunes. Anglesea developed as a convenient stopover for the mail coaches which plied the southern coastline in the 1850s.

Today Anglesea is a popular holiday destination because it combines a good beach with plenty of holiday activities. The fishing, surfing, sailing and windsurfing are all excellent. Not surprisingly the town's population increases dramatically in the summer months from 2,500 to 15,000.

The 35km Surfcoast Walk passes through the town and you can wander in both directions, along the coast and inland up beside the Anglesea River.
